Hal 9000 is a fictional character from the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' produced by Stanley Kubrick. HAL stands for 'Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer' which simply means that the purpose of this character is to portray an artificial intelligence machine on a space craft as communicating to the crew. During the time of the Cold War, funding was asked for from the US Government to enable the development of Artificial Intelligence however this wad denied, however this was around the same time as this film got realised. this shows me that back then, as well as now Artificial Intelligence is of great significance.
Within the film the character shows off its 'evil' side, showing the faults that could happen to AI in the future, this resulted in Hal 9000 being manually deactivated.
